Memorial Day Weekend Dental Emergency Care

Memorial Day is a day of observance for all the fallen American soldiers in all wars and conflicts. It is a long celebrated three-day holiday weekend with the official day of honor being on Monday. Memorial Day also marks the unofficial beginning of summer with most schools letting out for summer around this time.

We hope everyone can have a nice, relaxing holiday weekend without any worries or concerns. However, there are times when unexpected things arise while you are out at the lake or wherever you may be spending your holiday weekend. For instance, you may find yourself with a sudden emergency dental crisis from one of your adventurous outdoor activities.

If you happen to find yourself in a Memorial Day weekend dental emergency, there are a few things you can do until you can get to the dentist: 
  • ToothacheIf you get a toothache brush and floss your teeth gently and rinse with warm water. It could simply be a food particle has gotten lodged somewhere and causing pain or discomfort. If there is still some discomfort, take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Never apply directly to your gums or teeth. This could cause and chemical burn and more pain.
  • Broken Tooth, Crown or FillingIf there’s any bleeding, apply gauze and a bit of light pressure. The bleeding should stop within 10 minutes. If not, try a moist tea bag. If your injury is painful, try over-the-counter pain relievers and stick to soft foods. You can use dental wax for hard edges of chipped teeth that may be cutting your gums. If it is a crown or filling that broke off, try to save it and bring it to your dentist. Denture adhesive is a good temporary way to reattach the crown or filling until you can get to the dentist.
  • Knocked-Out ToothIf you have knocked a tooth out, the first step is to find the tooth. Once you locate your missing tooth, pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse the tooth gently with cool water. Do not use soap or scrub the tooth. You can try to put permanent teeth back in the socket and hold it there with gauze or a washcloth, but do not try to replace baby teeth. If replacing the tooth back into the socket isn’t possible, place it in a clean container with milk, saline or cool water. You may place the tooth under your tongue to keep it moist as a last resort. Get to the dentist quickly. Less than 30 minutes out of the mouth is optimal for saving the tooth. Seek emergency care if it is after hours..
  • Mouth Injury and BleedingIf you’ve injured your mouth and there is bleeding, rinse gently to find where the blood is coming from. Next, apply pressure on that area or use the gauze/tea bag method mentioned for broken teeth. The bleeding should stop within 10 minutes. If the bleeding still persists, contact a dentist. Seek emergency care if it is after hours or you are unable to get to a dentist. Even if the bleeding stops, make a point to visit the dentist to make certain you don’t need stitches or have an injured tooth.

May is Melanoma Awareness month! Melanoma is a malignant neoplasm of melanocytes. The incidence of melanoma of the skin has increased over the years. It is important to be informed of the causes and symptoms for early detection and treatment. Though melanoma of the oral mucosa is rare, everyone should be knowledgeable and be able to detect unusual lesions and other symptoms of this potentially fatal disease.

Symptoms of Melanoma Oral Cancer Include:
  • A Colored Patch (Red, White, Blue, Black)
  • An Ulcer or Canker Sore
  • A Thickened or Swollen Patch
  • Numbness and/or Pain
  • Difficulty Swallowing or Moving the Tongue
  • Sudden Tooth Loosening

If oral lesions with these characteristics present in the clinical differential diagnosis, a biopsy would be needed.  If the lesion is flat and not thickened, a biopsy may still be indicated if it has atypical color, borders, or size. Treatment for oral cancer is complete surgical excision with the most important prognostic factors being the thickness and depth of the lesion.

Factors that increase the risk of developing melanoma oral cancer include:
  • UV Sunlight Exposure
  • Fair Skin
  • Light Hair
  • Male Gender
  • Moles
  • Older Age
  • Family History
  • Poor Diets
  • HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)
  • Smoking
  • Heavy Alcohol Consumption

But having a risk factor, or even many risk factors, does not mean that you will get the disease. And some people who get the disease may have few or no known risk factors.

Everyone loves to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and enjoy some of our favorite Mexican appetizers, meals, and cocktails. Those zesty Mexican favorites just wouldn’t be the same without the addition of some fiery chili peppers. This Cinco de Mayo Trinity Premier Dental would like to honor these zingy little nuggets of fire. We have found some interesting facts about chili peppers of all varieties and some health benefits worth sharing.

Chili Peppers help boost your immune system. The bright color from chili peppers is derived from their high content of beta-carotene, or vitamin A. Vitamin A is keeps your mucous membranes healthy, which are your body’s first line of defense against pathogens. Chili peppers are also high in calcium, which promotes strong bones and teeth.

Chili peppers are high in capsaicin, which is known to fight the inflammatory process. Capsaicin gives chili peppers their pungence ranging from very mild to intensely spicy. With summertime approaching, many of us are focusing more on physical fitness. Although exercising is excellent for your health, it can damage your oral health if not addressed properly.

There are two main contributing factors to the negative impact on how working out affects your oral health:

Sports & Energy Drinks

Energy drinks may contain electrolytes to refuel your body, but they also contain acids that can be harmful to your teeth. If an athlete is drinking sports drinks before, during and after workouts, these acids will weaken the enamel. This leaves the tooth more susceptible to decay.

Open Mouth Breathing

People tend to breath heavily with an open mouth during an intense workout. This can have a drying effect on your mouth. Salivary production is decrease creating an environment for bacteria to grow and colonize. For these reason, open mouth breathing can leave your teeth at an even higher risk for dental issue among athletes.

A Few Fixes

  • Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water to replenish your body. Our body needs a water supply to produce saliva. Saliva acts as a natural cleansing of harmful bacteria from the teeth. While working out, your body produces less saliva. This allows bacteria to build up that can lead to tooth decay. Further more, the saliva that is produced during a workout is more acidic which also can erode enamel. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout.
  • Eat a Nutritious Diet – Proper nutrition is just as important in maintaining overall oral health as routine exercise. Meats, cheese, nuts and milk are all tooth-healthy foods. Adding crunchy vegetables to your diet will help fortify your teeth against damage. Vegetables are also very hydrating foods especially in their raw form. Choosing healthier snacks, such as carrots and celery, can actually aid in keeping your teeth clear from debris and bacteria.
  • Proper Dental Hygiene – Stay on top of your daily dental routine. Brush twice a day and floss once a day to keep your smile healthy.
